Certification a nationally recognized term by the private sector of voluntarily achieved standards. Certification is bestowed by a non-profit, professional organization to those members who have achieved said standards. It is non-governmental and voluntary. Certification expires on December 31st of each year.

How To Earn Certification:
Certification is earned by achieving a 425 on the VTNE and meeting one(1) of the following requirements:
An Associates or Bachelors degree from an AVMA accredited college program in veterinary technology and a letter of Recommendation
Bachelor's Degree in animal or biological sciences, with one year of full time practical work experience as a veterinary technician (resume with employer contact information is sufficient) and a letter of recommendation
Associates Degree in Animal or biological sciences, with three years of full time practical work experience as a veterinary techncian (resume with employer contact information is sufficient) and a letter of recommendation
Five years of full time practical work experience as a veterinary technician (resume with employer contact information is sufficient) and a letter of recommendation
Certification also includes an Initial Certification fee of $40.
Before applying for certification, your VTNE score must be on file with the RIVTA. If you sat for the VTNE in RI, then your score will already be listed in our database; however, if you sat for the test in another state you need to contact the other state board or PES and have your score sent directly to RIVTA.
The VTNE is administered by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) in January and June of every year. AAVSB requires that all individuals registering to take the VTNE in RI must have a college degree from an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology Program.

How To Maintain Certification:
Proposition to modify bylaws' continuing education (CEUs) requirements was opposed. Please refer to current RIVTA Bylaws for requirements.
Certification must be renewed annually. Individuals renewing their certification must Complete twelve continuing education units prior to renewal. (Continuing Education Units must be received from an approved venue. To find out if your CEU qualify please contact the RIVTA.)
