| What is Certification? Certification is a term recognized nationally as recognition by the private sector of voluntarily achieved standards. Certification is bestowed by a nonprofit, professional organization to those members who have achieved said standards. It is nongovernmental and voluntary. Statistics collected by the NAVTA show that on average, Veterinary Technicians that are "credentialed" receive the following benefits: |

| Certification Regulations Please be aware that RIVTA no longer administers the VTNE Anyone wishing to take the VTNE must do so through AAVSB (click on link above) AAVSB now requires that all individuals registering to take the VTNE must have a college degree from an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology Program except in the following states: Delaware, Wisconsin, Georgia and Washington Veterinary Technicians wishing to become certified in the state of Rhode Island must obtain an expressed passing score of 425 (criterion reference passing score) equal to a 75 and meet one of the following requirements: 1. Either an Associates or Bachelors degree from an AVMA accredited college program in veterinary technology and a letter of Recommendation 2. A Bachelor's Degree in animal or biological sciences, with one year of full time practical work experience as a veterinary technician (resume with employer contact information is sufficient) and a letter of recommendation 3. An Associates Degree in Animal or biological sciences, with three years of full time practical work experience as a veterinary techncian (resume with employer contact information is sufficient) and a letter of recommendation 4. 5 years of full time practical work experience as a veterinary technician (resume with employer contact information is sufficient) and a letter of recommendation Certification must be renewed annually Individuals renewing their certification must Complete 12 continuing education units prior to renewal (Continuing Education Units must be received from an approved venue. If you would like to know if your CEU qualify please contact the RIVTA) College courses may be used for CE only if they are of veterinary/animal subject matter. Each course credit is equal to 3 CEUs Certification also expires on December 31. All CEU must have been obtained in the 12 month period prior to renewal. Certification renewal form and proof of continuing education credits must be submitted with membership renewal. Veterinary Technicians do not need to be certified to be members of the RIVTA. Non certified veterinary technicians may apply for general membership to RIVTA. |
