Membership Qualification & Application Details

All memberships expire on December 31st each year.

The window for recertification for the following year is open from October 1st to December 31st.

There is a $25 Late fee for renewals received on and after January 1st.

Everyone is strongly encouraged to submit their application for renewal (+12 CE credits for Certified Members) sooner rather than later to ensure timely processing.

Upon completion of the appropriate membership form, your member profile will be updated, however, RIVTA will be checking Continuing Education certificates and may let you know if your membership renewal is missing anything.

Managers that wish to use the Job Board can reach out to RIVTA at [email protected] to secure their own membership profile.

NEW Certified Members: $50 for the 1st year

An individual that has taken and passed the VTNE and is applying for certification in the state of RI.

Letter of Recommendation: New members will also need a written letter of recommendation from someone in the veterinary industry. This applies to those transferring certification from another state, and new graduates from AVMA-accredited Veterinary Technology programs.
Transcript/Diploma: New grads will need to either upload or email a copy of their transcript to [email protected]. For more information on the steps to take, see I Graduated, Now What?
VTNE Scores: All new members must transfer their VTNE scores directly through the AAVSB system. Please note that new grads only need to designate the state of RI on their VTNE application for scores to be sent after passing. CVT Transfers will have to use the AAVSB VAULT Transfer system to send scores to RI.

BEGINNING JANUARY 1ST, 2024: RIVTA will no longer be accepting indirect or alternative pathways for New Certified Members. Only applicants who have attended an AVMA accredited program and have taken and passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) will qualify for New Certified Membership. Please see Transferring CVT below for more information.

RIVTA WILL accept Transferring CVTs if they were credentialed in another state prior to January 1st 2024, AKA Legacies/Grandfathered-in. If you have registered to take the VTNE prior to January 1st 2024, RIVTA will allow time for score transfer.

Any CVT certified by alternative pathway must maintain their certification each year. Late renewal or inability to meet requirements will result in the termination of certification with RIVTA.

Continuing Education:
New Graduates from AVMA accredited programs applying for New Membership do not need to submit Continuing Education (CE) credits for at the time of new membership application, however members can upload CE credits and certificates at any time after approval!
New Grads who apply for certification before October 1st will be required to submit some hours of CE credits at the end of the calendar year for membership renewal the following year.  Grads who apply after October 1st will not need to submit any hours of CE

*If applying for new certification as a grad between March 31st and June 30th, you will only be required to submit proof of 6 hours of CE credit at the end of the year for renewal.

*If applying for new certification as a grad between July 1st and September 30th, you will only be required to submit proof of 3 hours of CE credits at the end of the year for renewal.

We hope to better reflect the amount of time new graduates have spent in the field by requiring fewer hours for the first renewal, depending on the timing of application to RIVTA. We also hope this encourages CVTs to apply to RIVTA ASAP after passing the VTNE.
